Missed Period
Am I pregnant?

An early pregnancy symptom is usually a missed period.

There are two basic rules to know what happens when your period is late. These two rules assume that you have regular periods. Otherwise I recommend you to visit your doctor.

Missed Period - Pregnant
Rule #1: If you've had sex and your period has been delayed, this is your first pregnancy sign, there is a high probability that you are pregnant. Read about Rule #1.

Rule #2: However, if you have not had sex and your period has been delayed, there could be several reasons why you have not menstruated. Read about Rule #2.

What if my period is late and the home pregnancy test is negative?

I have not had sex and my period is late, what’s happening?

If you are in Rule #1, I suggest that you perform a home pregnancy test. Run to the pharmacy to buy any type, any brand, of those tests. Most home pregnancy tests have very good results.

Missed Period - Baby If you were hoping to get pregnant, and your pregnancy test was positive, you are on track to be a new mom, a little baby is on its way to make you happy. If you wish, you can make your first appointment with your gynecologist or specialist to confirm your pregnancy. Maybe your doctor will perform a blood test or directly with an ultrasound, you will see your baby for the first time, although not very clearly because you will have only about 3-4 weeks pregnant. I am sure you will be happy about the missed period.

However, if the positive result has been an unexpected surprise and possibly unwanted, take it easy and relax, your pregnancy is confirmed by 99%. I suggest you to talk to your partner like two reasonable people. Nothing is more beautiful in the world that having a baby. This little baby is who will give you the strength to deal with maturity the rest of your pregnancy.

What if my period is late and the home pregnancy test is negative?

I met some moms with a missed period, and negative pregnancy test, even when indeed they were pregnant. This is not uncommon, it happens.

I believe one of the main reasons is a miscalculation on your period. There are always changes in the assumptions regular periods. The menstrual cycle is on average 28 days. This means that you have to count 28 days from the first day of your period in order to know when you are going to menstruate again. I'm honest, but I can hardly keep my head to count 28 days. I have to have a calendar and mark the next date of menstruation. Otherwise, I lose control. Therefore I recommend you to use a paper calendar to mark the day of your next period.

Other factors that can result in a negative pregnancy test when you missed a period are because of a change in your dates of ovulation, or the pregnancy test was performed before implanting the fertilized egg in the uterus wall.

Just in case, I suggest you make a second pregnancy test, maybe a blood test. And if the result is still negative, you have to consider some abnormalities in your period, and I recommend you to visit your doctor.

I have not had sex and my period is late, what’s happening?

Rule #2: Pregnancy is not the only reason why you can miss your period. Think hypothetically, our menstrual cycle is a precise machine and an ongoing process every month. This machine is not aware of external factors and it may lose control. Our body has to react to unplanned events. So some external factors that can affect your period are:

  • You went off the pill due to it was making you sick. Your next period date can be affected because probably your body is adjusting again.
  • Disease: Illness can also cause period late. Again, relax and go with your doctor to relieve the disease. The missed period will be temporary.
  • Stress: The stress in our lives has been the cause of many diseases, you may even forget the date of your period. All our body reacts by hormones, including menstruation. Stress affects the hormone that causes menstruation, which is why our period may be delayed. Relax, and forget all your concerns.
  • Schedule changes: The human body also reacts to changes in schedules. If you suddenly stay working too late, or you get up earlier than usual, this can affect that your period is delayed.
  • Overweight: Being overweight is cause of several disorders in your body, including a missed period. Hormonally menstrual cycles can be altered.
  • Low weight: Being thin is not a problem, but being skinny, down your average body weight, that’s a problem. This can cause irregular periods, and the total loss of menstrual cycles. This disorder is commonly known as amenorrhea.
